There is absolutely no doubt that Covid 19 has applied the brakes to the Hospitality sector! But before anyone had the words Corona Virus on their lips, sadly over 150 small catering businesses were failing every week, and that was just in the south of England! During our meetings with business owners we have always impressed upon them how vitally important it is for their businesses to be what we call "future-proof". Most small business owners spend their time dealing with the day to day running of the business, and have little or no time to focus on two of the most important areas of their enterprise, security and growth. Covid 19 has now exposed ALL of the major business problems; not just problems caused as a direct result of the pandemic, but pre existing issues that have been a serious underlying factor in the failure figures we discussed above. These issues can no longer be ignored by the hospitality sector as a whole.
No business plan is fool proof, and there are always occurrences that are not thought of before a project is started. The "unexpected" problems that turned the hospitality sector from go to stop, were the worst case scenario. While business managers cannot create policies and procedures for every eventuality that might occur, they can plan for most of the possible contingencies and create processes and proceedures for how to deal with the unexpected.
